Simba Sports Club (SSC)
When I moved from the U.S I moved to Tanzania I had the ambition of developing the national football team as the best in Africa. Shortly after I started working for MeTL Group, I was able to took on the challenge of sponsoring Simba Sports Club (SSC) of Dar es Salam. This proved to be a lucky initiative because SSC won various trophies during METL’s sponsorship. Most significant achievements of the Club include domestic league (twice in a row), Tusker Cup (three times consecutively) and also East and Central African club cup.During our four-years of sponsorship, SSC won six trophies.
The major achievement of SSC at that time was the victory over Egypt’s reining champions like Zamalek. Historically North African teams have taken precedent over Tanzania during many matches but Simba achieved victory many times for Tanzania in those challenging times
Mohammed has already been a huge fan of the local football league and sports in Tanzania. He decided to buy Mbagala Market Football Club, now known as African Lyon Football Club. It was in the first division when he bought it and it then got promoted to Premiership Division for the 2009-10 season.
The purpose of Mohammed venturing into footbal was to help to promote the local footballers all over the world. His aim at the time was to enable Africa Lyon to play in its very own stadium, which would help the team gain its own revenues independently. His vision was tosee African Lyon in the league of continental tournaments against the likes of Al Ahly and Asec Mimosas.
Players like Yaya Toure and Kolo Toure were competing with Asec Mimosas of Ivory Coast and now they have moved to the next level in the Champions League of Europe. Mohammed wanted to make sure Tanzanians hold their head in pride like the people of Ivory Coast one day in seeing win at the highest levels.
In year 2005, President H.E. Jakaya Kikwete was elected to become the fourth President of the United Republic of Tanzania. As a sports fanatic I was really pleased to have Kikwete as our leader since he is an avid sportsman himself. His decision to bring a foreign coach to train the national football team was met with much approval by all football fans in Tanzania. The Ministry of Information, Sports and Culture formed a Committee to help the Taifa Stars, the national team of Tanzania.
Shortly after the set-up of this commitment, I was humbly honored to be appointed as the Chairman of the Committee by the Minister and I made sure that Taifa Stars work day and night to achieve the standards of top football nations in Africa.
Under my chairmanship and the cooperation of various stakeholders in the country, we have brought new hope to the football fanatics of Tanzania. Taifa Stars qualified for continental tournament for home grown players (CHAN) which took place in Ivory Coast.
